CITY RESERVES

THE COUNCIL'S POLICY

DOMAIN BOARD SUGGESTED

Within recent months there has been considerable agitation in Wellington over the question of. the city reserves, and every move made by the. council has- been carefully watched and usually criticised. The work .at Kent terrace is a case in point; the proposal to lease a portion of the Town Belt to the Winter Show Association ie another. When the Kent terrace dispute was at its height the Wellington Reserves Protection and Improvement Society cam* into being. This body, formed with the object of keeping* close eye bnJth'e city reserves and preventing, rt possible, the whittling away of the city's-open, spaces, will hold its first annual .meeting next week. ... '-..; 2,'. :'■ At this meeting light will be thrown, on the reserves policy of the City. Council, and those present will be invited to carry a number of. motions,:dealingwith various aspects of'the question. From the point of view of public: in - terest, the most important motion-to,lie considered by the meeting will be that suggesting the establishment of a Domain Board. It reads as follows:—;.; . That in view of the past unsatisfactory administration, and even misappropriation of portions of the city reserves, this society is of the;opinion that the whole of the city reserves (whether dedicated or not) ■ should be vested in a Domain Board. ; Other motions which will'be:submitted to the meeting will be the following :— , . . "That it be a recommendation to the incoming council to inquire fully, into the proposals of the Wellington City Council to lease. several acres 'of the' Town Belt to the Winter Show Association, and that the. matter be viewed in. the liglit of the platform of the'society as set out in its objects and rules.'"'' ' "That it be a recommendation to the' incoming council to inquire fully anio the loan proposals of the Wellington City Council as tabulated by the chairman of the Reserves Committee, and the unexpended, authorised loans of 1920, with authority to make representations to the City Council on'behalf of the society." ' ■ _ "That this society request the Wellington City Council to furnish it with a complete plan showing the locality and area of all city reserves." ' "That this society strongly' urges upon the City Councilthe necessity "for the immediate planning out of the Town Belt and other reserves quite irrespective of whether the actual, development of them or any portion of them is to be undertaken at an early date or not."
