TRIAL

A Court-Martial opens at Mekinez, Morocco, to-morrow, to try the German Klems, who was Abd el Krim's gunnery expert, for treason and desertion. Klems was a corporal in the Foreign Legion and deserted to the Riffs before the operations commenced. He became Abd el Krim's secretary and chauffeur, and actively participated in the organisation of the Riff fighting line. He instructed gunners, raided French posts, and carried off arms and ammunition. He was finally captured in an ambush specially laid by a French intelligence officer. Klems was known throughout the Riff country as'"The German Pilgrim." Abd el Krim gave him' three wives, four houses, two horses, and' one mule.
