PROPOSED LEGISLATION
MR. LANG OVERRULED

The Labour Caucus decided to introduce a Bill into Parliament shortly to abolish the late shopping night, and also one to subdivide large estates. A committee was appointed to report on a proposal received from the Tipper House that members of the Legislative Council should be paid out of pocket expenses amounting to £300 a year. It was decided that all churches in the State should be relieved of all taxation at present paid by them. This particularly applies to land used for church purposes, church halls, tennis courts, cricket grounds, and residences of. ministers, but excludes schools and school playgrounds. ' . Mr. Lang opposed the proposed legislation, but failed to carry the caucus with him. . The Child Endowment Bill will be. introduced in the Assembly to-day. A proposal that the benefits of the scheme should be retrospective to Ist January was defeated by the caucus.
