THE MILFORD TRACK

DOCTOR'S IMPRESSIONS \

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ! DUNEDIN, 6th February. ' ; One of the four visiting doctors-who' actually, did walk the Milford Track when the Moeraki put into the Souad, was Dr. W. J. Long, of Bendigo. Mthough he did most of the walk iii heavy Tain he is delighted with his experience and has nothing but good to say for the track officials. "Of course/ he told a reporter, '/you can't talk about it. It is pure magnificence, you realise that, and:you also -realise that any words must completely fail you." '. . •. ■ - ■ '' But how did you get; ashore, and what actually happened'?" the inter-. viewer asked. ■ . ■'.' ; ' . "Well, our ship, as you know, was a day late, "Dr. Long said. "We steamed up the Sound dead slow. Ye did not go nearly as far as the Bowen Palls, but we waited inside pretty near three hours, firing: several datouatora and sounding, the siren. In the meantime, Captain Hamilton, who was with a surveying party at the Sound, rowed out in a small boat to get what news there was, and- he offered to takd!!half a-dozen ashore. The' ship then turned about, and the water surging up took away the rowlocks and,all the oars Dut one, so that the shore party had to be curtailed by two and the boat had to be fishtailed along from the 3tern. It was raining heavily all the time, and we had hard woik making the shore at Sutherland's old,.place. Thero wo were al/i to get in-touch with the launch which took us. to Sandily Huts. We left the Moeraki at 1 o'clock, and did not arrive at the Euts until 4. ''It was all we could do to fight the current, and it took the launch over half. an. hour to negotiate, the short stretdh between Sutherland's and the huts." Dr. Long states that only the sleeping huts have i:'scn burned oul; at Milford. The st6re huts are still standing and there are-plenty-of stores there. The party left Milford immediately and arrived at Quintin at 9.30 that night. It rained during the whole walk, but they enjoyed every inch of it. Dr. Long was one of those who attended the Congress in Danedin. $1 years ago.
