WRECK OF ORPHEUS
SIXTY-FOURTH ANNIVERSARY
To-day is the 04th anniversary - of the wreck of H.M.S. Orpheus at Manukau Heads, in which 185 lives were lost out of a complement of 256. The disaster occurred in brond dayliglit, and when the conditions on the bar wore not unfavourable for crossing.
The circumstances arc still vivid in the memory of Mr. G. Ellis, of Auckland, who was engineer of the guuboat Avon at the time. Advice of the wreck was received by H.M.S. Harrier at about 11 p.m., and the Avon was sent to the scene. Not even the mast was visible when daylight broke.. The Avon returned to Onehuuga with the survivors. '
