REVOLT IN PORTUGAL
FIGHTING AT OPORTO
(Received 7th February, 2 p.m.)
LISBON, 6th February. Many rebels were killed and hundreds wounded in. Oporto in a battle which has continued since Friday. The rebels, entrenched in a square in the heart of the town, are equipped with machine-guns. Buildings have been badly damaged and civilians wounded. Thus far the Government troops have endeavoured to spare buildings, but the latest report states that the Minister of War rejected a rebel offer to surrender conditionally, and has called upon the population to evacuate the city, as a general bombardment is impending. The residents are pessimistic, not believing that the Government has gained the upper hand.
