THE NORTHUMBERLAND
TO ENTER CALLIOPE DOGK
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evenlrr Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day. At the present time the Calliope Dock is not long enough to accommodate the Northumberland, which is coming to Auckland for repairs, and the work of cutting away a recess at the top end of the dock has been commenced. The Northumberland is 550 ft over all, and the floor of the dock is approximately 520 ft in length. The fact that the vessel has a cruiser stern makes the position more difficult. ■ Some 34ft of the bow will have to fit into the recess which is easily wide enough to accommodate it. Everything will be in readiness for the Northumberland when she arrives; she is expected in about nine days' time.
Although the Northumberland is the longest vessel that will have entered the dock, she will not be the largest. The NiagarfJ[ with a gross tonnage of 13,415, has been accommodated there but her length is only 525 ft. The Northumberland's gross tonnage is 12,160. The enlargement to the dock will be a permanent one.
