DUNEDIN, 4th February. The - Plunket Shield match, Otago v. Canterbury, was commenced at Carisbrook to-day in perfect weather. Canterbury went in first on an easy wicket; the outfield was faßt. Canterbury made a weak beginning, both Nixon and Crawford going cheaply. Page and Talbot, however, brought about a change, Page playing a patient innings for 73. With nine down for 192, due to A. W. Alloo's excellent bowling, it seemed that Canterbury's total might not reach 200, but Read and Cunningham made a last-wicket stand and added 50. Read played a bright innings for 35. Both were dropped off Dickinson and the lost chances cost 30 runs.

Blunt and Knight opened Otago's innings in good style; the latter went for 18, but Blunt batted brilliantly and when stumps were drawn had made 73 out of the total of 107 for four wickets.
