GREAT CONCERN FELT
(Received 4th February, 1.15 p.m.) LONDON, 3rd Fobruary. The Australian wine trades are greatly concerned at the action of the Customs Department in restricting clearances of wine for February, March, and April to the quantity cleared for the corresponding period in 1926, plus 5 per cent. This is regarded as a precautionary measure in anticipation of an increase in duties when the Budget comes down.
Australian importers state that tho increasd of 5 per cent, is absolutely inadequate, inasmuch as the present rate of consumption is at least 100 per cent in excess of that of 1926
The Emu Australia Wine Company has written to Mr. "Winston Churchill protesting against the great hardships the restrictions impose on those importing only Australian wines, and asking him not to restrain the present rapid development of the trade.
