MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE
REMITS FROM WELLINGTON
The following remits are being laid before the Municipal Conference at Palmerston North next week from the City Council:— 1. That local bodies be given absolute power to plant trees on streets. 2. That legislation be obtained to prevent claims such as have been made lately requiring public hall owners to pay license fees to companies claiming to have copyright over all songs and public productions.
3. That provision be madet (a) allowing the -council to mako contracts for a definite term with its employees; and (b) prescribing reasonable notice to employees dismissed without cause.
4. That the limit of 1 per cent, on the general rate to cover unauthorised expenditure be increased.
_ 5. That legislation be obtained amending the Motor Vehicles Act of 1924 so that licenses for drivers may bo made for twelve months from any date throughout tho year, and not only from the Ist April, and that each driver's license may be once issued for portion of twelve months only in order to spread the dates of issue over the whole year. (Section 21 of Act.) G. That outstanding rates be made a charge on property, and that the local authority have power to register such charge without Court procedure. 7. That authority be given to inspectors under the Dog Eegistration Act, 1908, to enter on private property in the execution of their duty. The Director of Town Planning (Mr B. is. Hammond) will meet town clerks from va::ioii3 centres during the conference period.
