LONDON WOOL SALES.

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, 2nd February. The wool sales have closed. Competition throughout was more active than for many sales past. The German demand dominated in merinos and the Home trade operated keenly for crossbreds and slipes, while French buying showed reserve. Of 124,000 bales catalogued there wa/ sold to the Home trade 42,000, to the Continent 53,500, to the United States 3000. There were held over 25,000 bales. v Best merinos were fully 5 per cent, above December rates, and medium and common grades were very firm in sellers' favour. Finer crossbreds advanced 7% per cent., and medium and lower grades were from par to 5 per. cent, higher, as were scoureds and slipes. Lambs were little changed. The best were firm, but faulties were irregular.

Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London house under date of 2nd February:—"Wool sales closed firm and active, with brisk competition. French buyers operating freely, German buyers less active; Home trade buying steadily. As compared with last sales, good scoured merino Id to 2d higher; other descriptions scoured merino, par to l%d higher; good greasy merino, Id to l%d higher; other descriptions greasy merino, par to Id higher; greasy halfbred, %d to l%d higher; greasy fine crossbred, %d to Id higher; greasy medium and coarse crossbred, par to Id higher; pieces, %d to Id higherscoured crossbred, unchanged; slipe, par to Id higher; lambs, Id to l%d higher. Offered 123,966 bales; sold 103,000 bales. Continent have bought 56,500 bales, Home trade 43,500, America 3000; carried forward 25,500, of which 12,000 bales were not offered. The following is the range of prices:—Halfbred, 56-58, good to super, 22% dto 25% d, low to medium 18% dto 21% d; halfbred, 50-56, good to super 20d to 23d, low to medium 17d to 19d; fine crossbred, 48-50, good to super 16% dto 19% d, low to medium 14d to 16d; fine crossbred, 4(5-48, good to super 15% dto 17% d, low to medium 13% dto 15d; crossbred, 44-46, good to super 14% dto 16d, low to medium 12% dto 14d; crossbred, 40----44, good to super lid to lod, low to medium ll%d to 13% d; coarae crossbred, 36----40, good to super 13d to 14d, low to medium lid to 12% d."

Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Go., Ltd., are in receipt o£ the following wool market cablegram from their London agents, dated 2nd February:—Sales have closed firm, compared with opening rates, greasy merino wool suitable, for the Continent advanced 7% per cent.; greasy merino, best descriptions, and scoured merino, best per to 5 per cent, advance. ' Greasy merino wool suitable for Yorkshire, par to 5 per cent, advance; scoured merino other descriptions, market shows no change; scoured merino, faulty and inferior, small demand; crossbred greasy, fine, par to 5 per cent, advance; crossbred medium and coarse, advanced 5 per cent, to 7% per cent; crossbred greasy, good length staple, shows the greatest advance. Crossbred pieces and lambs, 5 per cent, to 7% per cent, advance; crossbred scoured, par to 5 per cent, advance; slipe crossbred advanced 5- per cent. Closing quotations compare as follows:—
