PLUNKET SHIELD

OTAGO V. CANTERBURY

(By Telegraph.—Pres3 Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The Plunket Shield match between Otago and Canterbury began this morning in fine weather. Canterbury won the toss, and Nixon and Talbot opened the innings on an easy wicket. The fourth ball of Dickinson's first over was fatal to Nixon, who was given out ibw. 4—l—4.

Crawford filled the vacancy, hitting Dickinson to the boundary. In Torrance'a second over, Crawford miss-hit one, and Blair took a good catch. 15 2—6.

Page opened with a single off Dickinson. Talbot drove Torrance to the boundary, bringing 40 up after 38 minutes' play. Blunt relieved Dickinson and a 4 resulted from the over. Talbot brought 50 up with a single off Blunt, and Page had two lucky escapes from being run out. Alloo took the ball from Torrance. The new bowler's first over was a maiden. Talbot played the first ball of Blunts fifth over on to his wickets. 63—3—26

The batting continued to be brisk, and the century took 86 minutes. Oliver was not impressive during his stay and was scoring from a big proportion of uppish shots. He was brilliantly taken by Blunt at square leg. 106—4 19. Page, in the meantime, was playing correct cricket, but was content mostly with singles. Hamilton played all over one from Torrance, who was bowline superbly. 123—5—8.

v At the luncheon adjournment the score was 125 for five wickets.
