AT STRATFORD

CUP TO ROYAL MINT

ORATION WINS DOUGLAS

HANDICAP.

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")

STRATFORD, Ist January. The annual meeting of the Stratford Raoing Club opened in dull weather befor a big attendance. - Since last meeting costlyimprovements have been made to the race track, and the course appointments, which to-day would do credit to a metropolitan- club. The totalisator handled £30,183, against £31,318 fin the corresponding day iast year. After the race for the Cup the Judicial Committee held an inquiry into a complaint of slight interference., by Royal Mint with Euphonium, but after hearing evidence, decided to take no action. " ; TRIAL STAKES. No fewer than seventeen started for the Trial ; Stakes, Erin-go-Bragh carrying thirty; tickets more than Always, > with. Kyngzone' and Coma also well supported. When tapes rose Taikawhana was hopelessly left, and'Erin-go-Bragh went to the lead, followed by Modest Boy, Lady Acre, and Midnight Camp. Racing into the straight, Eriri-go-Bragh had a useful'lead, but tired over the last few chains, Modest Boy running on well to win nicely from Midnight Camp, who only, beat Lady Acre and Erin-go-Bragh.- The next to finish was Always, who was very unlucky. TARIKI HACK. Of the. starters for the Tariki Hack, Branson had most admirers, with very few tickets between Partaga and Gold Collector. The start was a good one, Partaga going to the front; from Whetuhine, Blend, and Blue Peter. At the halfmile post Blend was just in front . ■ of Partaga, with Bair Abbey, Blue Peter, and Maveelish handy. Blend arid Partaga entered the. stranght together, and in a fine'finish Blend got the verdict by a nose from Partaga, with B.lue Peter two lengths off followed by Branson, Polo, and Winsome Boy. j : STRATFORD CUP. „ •■■ A cood-class field contested the Stratford Cup, and in a good pool Euphonium was installed a decided favourite, the best supported of the others being ; Briglit Day and The Lamb. "From an excellent despatch, The Lamb was immediately taken to the front, and.passing the stand was followed by Hipo, Euphonium, Royal Mint, Pop Off, Income, and LadyAnstruther. Racing up the back Lady Anstruther made a fast run,' and at the fivefurlong post was alongside The Lamb, with Pop Off, Euphonium, Hipo, and Bright Day all'close up. At the straight entrance The Lamb, Royal Mint/and Lady Anstruther were' racing aßreast, with Euphonium trying for an opening A furlong from the post Euphonium and Royal Mint drew to the front, and in a good struggle Royal Mint beat Euphonium by a head, with Hipo a good tnird two lengths away, followed by. Lady An-

struther, The Lamb, and' Crossfire, and Pop Off. '■'■■ '"':!■■'■■ ' ■"■■; - OHURA HURDLES. A moderate-class lot: contested,, the Ohura Hurdles, and in an even betting race Tamakana, Glencairn, Kareao, and Uralla were divided by less than a hundred tickets. Kareao was the earlyleader, being followed by Gleneairn, Rehutai, and Uralla. Going out of the straight, Glencairn took charge, but lost a stirrup at the next jump and was pulled up, while Kareao fell at the same obstacle. Racing lip the back, Rehutai went to the front, and had the race won entering the straight, but her rider (Holland) took matters very easily, and Uralla with a late run almost beat Rehutai. Tamakana and Sea View were next.. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Lady Desmond was a good- favourite for the Juvenile Handicap, but strong support for Jazz Baby, Skypoint, and Eka made "her price quite: a good one. Little time was lost at the barrier, and Lady Desmond was. on. the move when the tapes rose. At the end of a furlong Baby Bun joined Lady Desmond in the lead, and the pair were just clear of Eka and Jazz Baby racing into the sti'aight, but over the last part of the journey Baby Bun ran on best to beat the favourite by a length; with. Eka a good third and Jazz Baby fourth. . DOUGLAS HANDICAP. A number of useful sprinters contested the Douglas Handicap, and of them Lady Bentinck was preferred to the extent of 100 tickets before Oration. Prom a splendid start the field raced in a line for a distance, then Oration went to the lead from Lady Bentinck, Bright Knight, and Pouma. Racing to the straight ■ Oration was just in front of Lady Bentinck, Bright Knight, and Bonogne. Over the last furlong an interesting race took place, Oration hanging- on well to beat Papaponga by half a length, with Bright' Knight a neck, further away, followed elosciy by Bonogne, Glengariff, and Pouma. - MIDHURST HACK. Numerous seratchings reduced the fieldin the Midhurst Hack to six runners. Backers went solidly for Vivo, while fair support was given Bent and Always. When the barrier rose Vivo, Always, and Bent began best, and raced past the stand in line. Going out of the straight Vivowent to the front to lead Always, Bent, and Winsome Boy. There was no alteration in the leading positions till well in a lme for the judge, when Always took charge to win. easily, by a; length and a half from Vivo, who beat Bent by half a length. Then followed Closefire and Airtight. .-■■■■■ .- ■ ; RAILWAY HANDICAP. The scratchings were again heavy, in the Railway Handicap, only nine of thirty acceptors going -to the post. -When the betting ceased Dobbin had been made a £30 better; favourite than Tip Tree, and there was plenty' of money for Sea Star and Billikens. .. Front a good despatch Sea Star began best to lead M-: likens, Dobbin, and Grand Lupin. This quartette.. comprised the leading division into the straight. In a good race over the final stages-Tip Tree finished well to beat Macroom by a length, with Sea Star and Arch Arrow very close up. ; Results:— - ."Trial Stakes, of .150 soys; six "furlongs — Modest Boy, 8:7, 1; 6 Midnight Camp, 9.0° Ji; 8 Lady Acre, 9.0, 3.
