In the Sheffield Shield match between Victoria and South Australia, Victoria ir the first mnmgs made 304 (Ponsford 108 Hendry 68, Ryder 34, Hartkopf not out A)). -■■ Halcome took two wickets for 60 runs; Grimmett four for 101, and Lee three for 32. South Australia had on» wicket down .for 25 (Williams not out 15) when stumps were drawn.; The weather was fine, and the wicket excellent. Pons/ord-and Woodfull opened, but the latter went when only sir. With Hendry m, the scoring became lively. Frequent changes of bowling were teed without avail, the batsmen, particularly Pons-tord,-making all appear easy. The'partnership added 132 before Hendry lost his' wicket. Ryder kept the field moving whilehe lasted, his score including four 6's Ponsford, with the total, at 259, followed quickly, Lee making a remarkably fine catch off Halcombe. Hartkopf- failed to stop the rot in the tail. In the short tims remaining before stumps . were drawn South Australia had lost one wicket.
