BIG SCHEME

IRRIGATION IN CENTRAL OTAGO,

(By Telc£r*phi—Ere« Aisociation.)

DUNE-DIN, This Day.

Tho Irrigation 'Commission has recently devoted a considerable amount of time to an economic survey of the proposed Upper Manuherikia Irrigation scheme, which involves an outlay of approximately £1,000,000 sterling, and if taken in hand will- irrigate 100,----000 acres. The engineering survey has already been completed, and the scheme has been declared practicable on the matter of levels .and quantities and water available.

A scheme of this nature would-mean much to Central Otago, but very properly most careful consideration has to be given to the quality of'the land for irrigation1; in other words, whether the land is good enough to sustain the expenditure by the Government and the charges upon farmers.

The -Commission 'htis just finished an economic survey of the proposed Boaring Meg scheme.
