Mr. Coates visited the offices of the Froneh Rugby Union where, on behalf of the M!aori people, he presented ..a beautifully carved shield commemorating the Maoris' tour.' . M. Brennus, the Union's president!, welcomed Mr, Coates and eulogised the Maoris. , , . - Mr. Coates, 'replying, emphasised the esteom in which the New Zealanders hold the Maori race, M. Muhr handed over a .book relating to French discoverios in the South Seas, printed in 1774, which;the-Due de dazes is presenting to the New Zoaland Archive? Department. ■ ' x 'M. Painleye paid a tribute to Mr. Coates'a sorvices in wartime, after which Riki and Haupapa led a war dance. Mr/Coates leaves for London on 23rd December, and will spend Christm^ in Herefordshire. He sails ior New York jn tlio Aquitania on sth Janupary, and expeetss to arrive in New Zealand on 12th February.
