MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held yesterday, when there were present Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor), and Councillors A. M'Bain, W. G. Meldrum, B. Waldie, H. G. Teagle, L. T. Watking, A. Grierson, A. J. Hobbs, and E. W. Hunt.

The P. and T. Department advised that it had been decided to place a "local" slot telephone in the vicinity of the Post Office, as requested. The Department - was thanked for its prompt action. Messrs. Friis and Shaw applied for a permit for a temporary wood and iron building, within the brick area, to be removed immediately the Christmas season was over. The application was granted, providing the building was removed by 4th January.^

Mr. H. W. Katene applied for permission to erect a temporary stall next the Town Hall building in connection with the Eastern Hutt School Queen Carnival. This was granted.

The Mayor reported that a conference had been held on the question of bus licenses. He could not say what the outcome would be, but i tmight be that the licenses which had been refused would now be granted.

An application was received from the King George Theatre to show pictures on Christmas Day, and it was granted. The council agreed to make the necessary survey in regard to the dedication of a strip of laud to the council from the Hutt Central School authorities. •

The Works Committee reported :—"The present fee for a sewer connction is £6 10s. During the last financial year the borough made a loss of £120 on these .fees, and during the first six months of the current financial year each eewer connection put in has averaged £7 10s lOd, and your committee has to recommend that the following revised scale of charges be adopted forthwith:—Connection to sewer situated within 4ft of the section boundary, £4; connection to sewer over 4ft distance from the section boundary, £7 10s. •Regarding the fees for storm water connections it is suggested that these be similar except where we give a 3in connection beneath the footpath to the channel, in which case it is suggested that the charge should be 2s 6d a foot run with' a minimum charge of £1 Is." The report was adopted. It was decided that the claim of the P. and T. Department, for approximately £30, being the cost of repairing the damage alleged to bo done to an electric cable by a borough workman, be paid. The engineer (Mr. A. G. Bush) reported that during the last four weeks 13,247,----6 GO gallons of water had been pumped. The Western Hills drainage scheme had been commenced..

The custodian of the baths (Mr. G A Pugh) reported that during the month, apart from season ticket holders, 3453 persons had used the baths, the takings amounting to £30 4s Sd. The temperature of the water varied_ from 50 deg. to Gldet;. The weather had bceu unsuitable for bathing.
