THE WINTER SHOW
PLAYGROUND QUESTION
DISCUSSED
PULL AGREEMENT BEACHED.
A conference was held yesterday on tho John street site by Messrs. T. Forsyth (chairman), G. L. Stewart (secretary), and G. Powell (architect), representing tho Wollington Education Board; and Messrs. E. H. Nimmo (chairman), G. Mitchell (manager), representing the Winter Show Association, when the association's proposals as they affected the proposed new school near the show site were reviewed. After a full and friendly discussion a complete understanding was arrived at.
The points for discussion were: (1) Playing areas; (2) dumping ground for spoil from school building site; (3) tho question of obscuring the sun from the school building.
Subject'to confirmation, by tho City Council, the Education Board, and the Show Association, the association's representatives offered to make the lower playing area available as a school playground; to give facilities for the disposal of spoil from the board's section, and to make any adjustments necessary and possible in regard to the third point.
Subject to an agreomont being reached in regard to No. 3, the Show Association's representatives understand the Education Board's representatives will place no obstacles in the way of the Winter Show Association's proposals. (
SPIRIT OF GOODWILL,
Mr. Mitchell, from whom the above information was obtained, mado the following statement also:—
The chairman (Mr. E. H. Nimmo) desires me to state that ■ the matter brought up by Mr. Forsyth, M.P. (chairman of the Education Board), was a 1 very important one, and Vvc are grateful it was ventilated early so that any necessary adjustments could be made to meet the board's wishes. Wa also appreciate tho spirit of goodwill and helpfulness in which the matters were discussed on tho ground. The playing area which.wo propose will be bigger and safer than and superior in every way to that originally proposed by the Edudcation Board, which was on a high bank near tho road. Tho new ground will be approximately 120 yards long, connected direct with the school site. It will be levelled and laid out by the association. Tho school, therefore, will have the use of a better ground free of cost than is possessed by any other school in the city, outside of Wellington College. The area, subject to confirmation by the bodies concerned, was offerod to the Education Board for a children's playground.
The association's representatives also agreed to give whatever facilities they could for tho disposal of the spoil from tho school site. In regard to obscuring the sun from the school buildings, we have agreed to place the show building 50. feet away from the boundary. As tho building is to bo only one story high, it is not thought the sun will be in any way obscured from the school. Wo are convinced that our activities at John street will be. a decided advantage to the school, and give it playing facilities not possible if it had to rely on Government expenditure. On behalf of the chairman and members of the Show Association —and I am sure 'I can speak also for the Manufacturers' Association —I wish to thank Mr. Forsyth and his colleagues for tho goodwill shown, and the opportunity of again demonstrating that we arc out to help in every possible way.
PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION OBJECTS.
The East Vogoltown Progressive Association last night adopted tho following resolution:—"That this association does not consider the proposed deviation of Hutcheson road to bo in the best interests of tho district, and that unless it is altered in such a manner ns to suit the interests of tho district steps will bo taken to prevent tho closing of the lower cud of Hutcheson road." It was decided that tho resolution be forwarded to the Wellington City Council and the Winter Show Association, . .. ...._:-
