MATCHES AT MIRAMAR
GOOD START IN FINE WEATHER.
The weather was ideal on Saturday, when the "Wellington Lawn Tennis Association made a start with its programme of interclub matches on the Miramar courts. There was a light southerly breeze, but as most of the games were played in brilliant sunshine those who were not fit suffered most. The matches attracted quite a number of spectators, and in some casesthe games were keenly contested. Eight senior teams competed, and the draw was as follows:—Brougham Hill v. Miramar' Grounds; Newtown v. Lyall Bay; Wellington v. Petone; Thorndon v. Victoria University. The Miramar Grounds Club made its first-- appearance, and it was composed of tho following men: —Messrs. E. Smyth, N. Wilson, Stevens, arid Penlington. The ladies' team'was: Mesdames Campbell, Heald, Brown, and Penlington. In the play Brougham Hill defeated Miramar, Newtown defeated Lyall Bay, Wellington defeated Petone, and Thorndon defeated University. Detailed results are: — Brougham Hill v. Miramar. (Brougham Hill players mentioned . . first). Men's Singles.—L. France beat E. B. "VV. Smyth, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2; D. France beat N. Wilson, 6-4, 6-3; Dobie beat Stevens, 6-5, 6-1; T. Ward beat Penlington, 6:0, '6-2.' Ladies' Singles.— Miss Tracy beat Mrs. Campbell, 6-2, 6-2; Miss A. Howe beat Mrs. Heald, 6-0, 6-1; Miss North beat Mrs. Brown, 6-2, 60; Miss Williams lost to Mrs. Penlington, 6-1, 5-6, 4-6. Men's Doubles. —"France and Prance beat Smyth and Wilson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; Dobie and Ward lost to Stevens and Penlington, 2-6, 6-5, 6-8. Ladies' Doubles.— Misses Tracy arid Howe beat Mesdames Campbell and Heald, 6-0, 6-2;. Misses North and Williams beat Mesdames Brown and Penlington, 6-2, 6-0. Aggregate.—Brougham Hill: 10 matches, 22 sets; Miramar, 2 matches, 6 sets. '
