FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT

EVIDENCE AT INQUEST.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

PALMERSTON N., This Day. An adjourned inquiry into the circumstances of the death of Cyril Alfred Kreagher, 27, who died in Palmerston Hospital on 24th July conse--quent on injuries received through being knocked down by a mOtor-lorry while cycling on the Kiinbolton road at Foilding the previous evening, was held this morning. Medical evidence was given to the effect that tho deceased's injuries were too severe to permit of an operation at the hospital. Arthur John M'Elroy, machinery foreman for the Oroua County Council, driver of tho lorry which struck the deceased, said that the vehicle carried two kerosene lamps, one on each side. He could see from a chain to a chain and a half in front of the lorry. The lights of a ear coming towards him blinded him, and he pulled over further towards fho correct side and felt a bump. Prior to that he had seen nothing on the road except the approaching car. He stopped tho lorry and on investigating found the deceased badly injured and also the bicycle badly damaged, with the lamp still burning. The Coroner's verdict was that deceased died through injuries received through being knocked down by a lorry driven by M'Elroy. The Coroner said that he did not propose to comment on the culpability of the driver, as even if there were not criminal proceedings there might bo a civil action.
