FIRES

At 2 o'clock this morning the Fire Brigade received a call to No. 21, Farrington street, "Wellington' South, to a fire in a wood and iron five-roomed dwelling, owned by Mr. John Paterson and occupied by Mrs. Lily E. Goldwater. The blaze was extinguished, but not before, hvuch damage had been done. The building was insured in the New Zealand. Office : for £450; The contents belonging to Mrs. Goldwater ■ were uninsured, and the.contents tho property of Mr. Paterson were insured in the Ocean Office for £250. Two rooms of the adjoining house, No. 19, were damaged. This building was owned.and occupied by Mr; John Breeu. The insurances were: Building £800 in the Phoenix Office; contents, United Office, £300. The. origin, of the fire is not known. A three-roomed dwelling, situated in "White's line, Lower Hutt, near tho stopbnnk, owned by : the Public-Works Department, and .occupied by Mr. David-. I son and family, was totally destroyed I by fire at 1.30 this morning. When ' Mr. Davidson discovered the outbreak it already had a good hold, ■ and he could do nothing but.rescue his family. ; The brigade nnswere_~ quickly, but the call was too late to be effective. Mr. Davidson is employed by the Public Works Department, being the driver of one of the steam navvies. The cause of the fire has notyet been ascertained.
