SOMEBODY'S BLUNDER

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —A short while ago the City Council after considerable pressure on the part of Kelburn residents, effected a very necessary deviation in Mount street, but unfortunately the improvement visualised was quite a different thing from the improvement actually effected. Our Main Highways Board has spent considerable money in eliminating dangerous curves on the various roads, and hag given gratis advice to municipal bodies concerning the evil of such curves—yet our council has seen fit to allow this Mount street deviation to be carried out with such a dangerous curve. Although the bend referred to, is not what may be described as a "hairpin," it is not hard to imagine the possibility of a serious accident occurring through its presence', inasmuch as ascending traffic is obscured from the view of descending traffic by this- curve. Possibly the chance of a mishap is predominant at "peak" or rush tunes; but I fail to understand why our city fathers, with all the knowledge they must.have gained iv the past, could, m their sane senses, and with due regard to life and limb, allow such a work to be proceeded with. I presume that nothing short of a serious accident will arouse the City Council to a state of constructive activity; but I feci sure that when our ney/ City Engineer from Liverpool is being uhown the latest improvements iv the city lie will throw up his arms in horror at the Mount street deviation, and make a note in his book to have this road altered as quickly as possible. In tho meantime may L suggest, with a view to placing it before our new engineer, that the south side of the deviation road be sheered back level—thus giving up and down traffic a clear view of approaching vehicles.—l am, etc., SAFE ROADS. ,
