The chairman of the MakarajGojinty Council (Mr. E. Windley) *t;a meeting of that body yesterday; afternoon-^sug-gested .that; a Dominion conference of contributing bodies to_ th.e.:fund-;for the maintenance of hospitals be held for the purpose of/considering': th'ja.: whole question. Mr. Windley said he did not think that any member of a contributing authority would suggest fot- one1 moment that an endeavour should W made to cut the finance-of the hospital boards, because if' thai were done it would mean lowering the standard of hospital efficiency. It had been' suggested, however,-' that- overy- means of raising revenue should be considered. There might, be many, other channel* from which reveniiff couM be obtained, and a conference -such as that suggested might indicate Rome of these sources. Mr. Windley 'remarked' tliat at the last meeting of the board he referred to the condition under which property, owners paid 50 per cent, of the maintenance of hospitals, and added that ii his opinion that was unjust. .'lt had^been estimated that 70 per cent, qf the property owners were working people, and the position was that, working people were required to find a large proportion of the cost. He thought it would bs admitted that that was unjust.' That was another reason why other channel* should be found for raising revenue for the maintenance of hospitals. After a general discussion, "it wu agreed that application should be made for official information in regard .-to the levies for the Wellington Hospital Board, including - the total incomes of the various contributing bodies and the amounts of their contributions. -.'"
