SYDNEY'S GROWTH

A BUILDING BOOM.

SYDNEY, 4th November. The fact that the historic Eoyal Hotel in Georgo street, Sydney, which was built in the heart of the city more than' eighty years ago, and which was one of the landmarks of Sydney, is to be demolished' to make room for anqther big'pile of buildings, reminds one of the unprecedented, extent of building operations in the capital of the mother State at the present time. In the last sixty years Sydney has been rebuilt two or three times. The building operations are not confined to any one portion of the city. From Circular quay to the central railway statiou, out to populous Darlinghurst, the home of fiat life, and Surrey Hills, in the east, and Pyrmont, on the west, buildings of from six to teu stories are going up in all directions. In the last eouplo of years the buildings completed in the city proper have cost more than £6,000,000. Already some are clamouring for permission to erect buildings in Sydney of forty Btories and over, but the consensus of opinion appears to bo favourable to the retention of the 150 ft height limit. Outside the city the growth, is no less remarkable. It is nothing these days to see quotations of from £10 to £20 a foot for land in attractive suburbs; for choice positions anything up to £40 and more is not only demanded but willingly given. How Sydney is going to cope effectively with its traffic in another decade is a thought which inevitably impresses itself upon one.
