DOMINION PUBLICITY

HANDY REFERENCE BOOK

A LONDON PUBLICATION.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, 12th August. It is only natural that the New Zealand Government Fubliei'y Department in London should know what is the best information to give those in this country who are seeking to gain a fair knowledge of tho Dominion before going out to make their homes there, or before permitting members of their families to do so. Hitherto all tiio pamphlets for distribution have been published in New Zealand. Nov,-, however, a. very excellent booklet dealing comprehensively with the Dominion has been issued under the tiuliierify of the High Commissioner by the Publicity Department in London. There is first of all an attractive coloured cover showing n typical mixed farm. A river runs in front of the bungalow, and there is a view of the snow-clad mountains in the distance. Again, the publication is a convenient size for a man's pocket, which is really a great consideration. -\s for the eontouts, there r.re, some eighty-four pages of up-to-date ini'orinai'ion arranged in such a way as to be of Iho .greatest use to people iv this country. Space, under tho various headings, is apportioned carefully, for it is evident that no words must bo wasted if a comprehensive review of New Zealand, its resources, activities, and developments is to be restricted to eighty-four pages. *'r LAND OF OPPORTUNITY. The first twenty-four pages, for instance, deal with tho history of the country, the country to-day, geographical features, climate, health, population, and government Then follow brief chapters on soil, exports, fanning opportunities, vacant and occupied spaces, undeveloped resources, State aid, co-operative movement, exports and imports. These subjects occupy half the pamphlet. Then there arc statements regarding tho New Zcalandcrs as Britain's best customers, progress of manufacturing, wealth distribution, transport and communications, and mineral resources. Tho remaining chapters deal with such subjects as afforestation, water-power, education, labour, the Maori race, scenery, sport, migration, advice to settlors, and State finance. There are two good maps showing the North and tho South Islands respectively, and' a list of free booklets and pamphlets which may be obtained from the High Commissioner's Department. Tho pamphlet contains fifty-seven illustrations chosen with a view of educating the reader as widely as possible. In every way the booklet will be most useful not only for distribution among intending settlers but among school children and others who desire to have a handy reference book on New Zealand, and for New Zealand visitors to this country who desire to give accurate information to their friends concorning their country. Tho fact that it has cost a little over 3d to produce each copy is another important consideration.
