NOT DEED OF A MANIAC
ELABORATE POLITICAL PLOT. '
(Received 13th September, noon.)"
ROME, 12th September.
The latest reports reveal Giovannini's real name as Gino Lucetti, aged 26, born in Tuscany, and living at Marseilles for the past few years. Investigations, although in their initial stages, indicate that it was not the isolated deed of a maniac or anarchist, but an elaborately hatched plot of political expatriated Italians.
Lucetti was taken to the city prison, where he was subjected to a'lengthy; cross-examination. It is .reported that he admitted cynically that he left France with the avowed intention of assassinating Mussolini. Asked why he was carrying a revolver, he replied: "You would not expect hie to present Mussolini with a bunch of flowers."
The police now believo that he had beon hiding in Rome for weeks, awaiting a favourable opportunity.
Other arrests have been made, but the identity of the arrested is not disclosed.
A girl made a "statement to the police that she saw five men in a motor-car waiting near tho scene of the outrage.
