AUSTRALIANS BATTING
ROOT AGAIN IN THE PICTURE
TWO BOWLED AND TWO
CAUGHT.
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, 11th September.
Heavy rain in tho morning delayed the start of the game at Blackpool between Australia and a North of England team until after lunch, the match commencing at 2.15 p.m. The wicket had been covered, and with a strong sun and breeze when play commenced it, was good, but rather soft. The following are tho teams:— North of England.—M. K. Foster (captain), V. W. C. Jupp, H. J. Enthoven, C. F. Root, E. J. Smith, C. W. L. Parker, G. Gunn, Roy Kiluer, W. Whysall, C. Parkin, and P. Holmes. Australia.—H. L. Collins (captain), J. M. Taylor, C. G. Macartney, J. M. Gregory, T. J. E. Andrews, W. A. Oldfield, A. A. Mailey, A. Richardson, W. M. Woodfull, C. Everett, and C. V. Grimmett. Root and Parkin opened the bowling for tho North of England, making an auspicious start, for in tho third over Taylor succumbed to a confident appeal for leg beforo off Roo*t. Woodfull in the meantime played solidly. Macartney batted brilliantly, scoring by fours accurately placed over the heads of tho close-set field. He was finally dismissed when he drove straight into the hands of mid-off. Collins batted quietly, both he and Woodfull apparently feeling the effects of the long overnight journey to Blackpool. Nevertheless he batted attractively. Andrews batted sparklingly, Woodfull continuing solidly, and he was never uncomfortable. Richardson was brilliant, scoring with many powerful drives, and pulling Root strongly to the leg boundary. An appeal against bad light by Richardson was sustained, and play ended at 6.15 p.m. Woodfull had batted doggedly throughout, taking the heart out of the bowling. The following are tho scores:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings. Woodfull, not out ' 83 Taylor, lbw, b Hoot 9 Macartney, c Parker, b Root 32 Collins, b Jupp • 16 Andrews, c Root, b Parker 22 Gregory, c Root, b Jupp 11 Richardson, not out 33 Extras 23 Total for five wickets 229
