SHANGHAI IN SUSPENSE

SOVIET SUBSIDY FOR RED ARMY.

Tho authorities of the International Settlement at Shanghai are taking strict precautions against the possibility of treachery, as the settlement is saturated with supporters of tho Red army. Permission has been given for Sun Chaun Fang's troops to enter the settlement, whenever necessary, to preserve peace. A brigadier-general of the Cantonese army has been arrested on a charge of bringing half a million dollars into Shanghai for the purpose of creating revolt among the local troops. All ships entering Shanghai arc now subjected to a strict search.

The latest messages confirm the fact of Sun Chaun Fang's retreat towards Shanghai, but declare it only a strategical move, though the Cantonese have captured Ping-Hsiang, an important railway province in the Hunan province.

Tho Southerners are better equipped and organised, possessing modern aircraft piloted by Russians. It is reported that the Soviet has offered 20,000,000 roubles in support of tho Red army. The capture of Hankow is regarded as a Soviet victory.
