KERBSIDE PUMPS
QUALITY OF BENZINE,
Mr. J. Mason (Napier) asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce recently whether regulations . will bo brought down requiring all vendors of benzine in bulk to sell according to a standard or grade ascertained by a test of tho benzine, and requiring all Tendors to clearly indicate such standard or grade to purchasers. The Hon. A. D. M'Leod replied on Saturday that his Department had already made certain inquiries about the matter, and it had been ascertained that companies supplying petrol to kerb-eide-pump owners were jealously guarding their own interests by making arrangements that all pumps into which certain brands of spirit were filled •would display signs guaranteeing that the spirit sold was of a certain brand. It was further understood that tho oil companies retained control of the kerbside pumps and were in a position to prevent adulteration. In those circumstances he was of the opinion that no good purpose would be served by tho introduction of regulations, the competition between the oil companies in regard to quality being apparently quite sufficient to protect the consumers.
