EFFECT OF STRIKE
BIG RISE IN POOR RELIEF COSTS,
(Australian-New Zealand Cable Assn.) LONDON, 25th August.
According to a report of the Ministry of Health, all forms of poor relief for the year ended 31st March amounted to 39£ millions sterling, compared with 36$ millions last year. The actual share met by the ratepayers was 34 millions, compared with 11$ millions before the war. "Whereas 1923, 1924, and 1925 showed a decline in the number of persons drawing relief, there was a sharp increase last year, the proportion being 312 per 10,000 of population, compared with 287 in the previous year. Th-re are at present 1,240,000 recipients. The report ascribes the increase to laxity of administration.
