AT HAWERA

LUPINEEL'S HUNT CUP

FLYING HANDICAP TO EUPHONIUM,

(By Telegraph—From "Vedette.")

WANGANUI, 25th August.

The Egniont-Wanganui Hunt Club had fine weather yesterday for the annual meeting on the Hawera racecourse, and although a cold wind reminded one rather unfavourably that spring has' yet to come there was nothing to complain about in the cloudless sunshine. The track was in excellent order. ior, this period of the year. A very fair attendance saw the totalisator turnover reach £9921 10s, compared with. £8888 last year, when the meeting was held in October at "Woverley.

The'average class of the horses engaged was not particularly, high, but some useful arid well-known gallopers were Ait having their first run of the season. Some of these are a little backward, and will be all the better for their outing. Seatown was a disappointing absentee. It was learned that ho had knocked himself -while ■ galloping on the track at Hawera, and, although the injury is not.considered serious, he may. have to miss the Wanganui Meeting.' There were a number''of falls in the jumping races. E. Warner and E. Stanivay both received minor injuries, and Conway was rather severely bruised and ehaken when Suweilah fell with him in the Hunt Cup.

Two juveniles, one by Limond from Noreen and the other by Bisoguo from a Trueshot mare, were sprinted down the straight between the races, with the two-y-ear-olds by Bisogne from.lei and Gasbag from Kohina. The two first-named are trained by O. Cox for Mr. G. F. Moore. Both can gallop well.

The handling of Ratapiko by S. Oakley in the opening event was questioned, and it was decided to recommend that his license be cancelled. J. Walker, who rode Alaric, was called before the stewards, but nothing was done in his case. HUNTERS' HURDLES. Banjuke was backed down to odds-on, vrith Tamakana, the second horse, at a long price. Sansalino led Tamakana, Frizzier, and Banjuke to the first fence, but once over Ratapiko and Banjuke drew clear of Roaming, Frizzier, and Tamakana. Ratapiko punched hard the fence near the six furlongs post, but lost little f round. Ratapiko and Banjuke just led 'rizzler, Tamakana, Sansalino, and Roaming. With three furlongs to go, Banjuke led over the Jast.fjsn.ce, just ahead of Ratapiko and Tamakaua, and went ou to win in a common canter from Tamakana by a length and a half. Ratapiko was a length away third, with Pikimai fourth End Roaming and Sansalino next. The winner outclassed the opnosition completely, and it would have taken a big rise in weight to bring him back to the field. He is owned by Mr. Eric Riddiford, but trained by JF. G. M'Kay at Bulls. Tamakana ran a fair race, but Ratapiko is one to be held in mind for New Plymouth on Saturday. He should soon do bettor. Nukinrmi's brother, Pikiinai, finished-on after being tailed right off in the early stages. HACK HURDLES. Taitaiata and Kareao were slightly better backed than Vanninia and Tawehi. Tawehi and Roman led Vanninia and Kareao for half a mile, with Taitaiata, who was sore, tailed off. Taitaiata moved up in the back straight, but could make little impression on Roman and Tawehi, who were well clear, and on terms at the last fence. Once over, Tawehi drew away to win by half a length from Roman, with Taitaiata four lengths away. Kareao was fourth, and "Vaiminia 100 yds away. Tawehi jumped well and put up a -fair performance, while Roman shaped good enough to win a minor hurdle race soon. Taitaiata and Kareao were disappointing. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Atone, Airtight, and Pop Off were the jbnly ones backed. Pop Off was the first but, but was soon joined by Atone, and this pair drew clear of Whakahihi, Lady Acre, and Lephan. Airtight was sent up across the top, and followed Pop Off and Atone into the straight, where Atone was well beaten. Airtight challenged, but failed to reach Pop Off by .half a length. Atone was eight lengths away third, and Lephal and Whakahihi next. The winner,' a five-year-old gelding by. Kilboy from Ararat, looks rather • ordinary. Airtight ran a fair race, but 9st was too much for a pony like Atone. She stops badly at the end of half a mile. They were a very poor lot. WAVERLEY HACK HANDICAP. (Japtain Gazeley, Subjection; and Monaghan were fairly equally backed. To Karcre, Subjection, Monaghan, and Mintleaf* were the leaders, down the back,- with Captain Gazeley last. At the half-mile Te Kaiere just led Monaghan and. Subjection with Gold Collector and Mintleai' nest. .At the turn Te Karere. and Monaghan were clear of Gold Collector and Captain Gazeley. Te Karere, Monaghan, and Gold Collector had a good battle to the post, Te Karere beating Monaghan by a Head, .■with Gold Collector half a length away third. Captain Gazeley, Mintleaf, and {Subjection were next. Te Karere, a sister to Yorna and Pouma, tan a very solid race, for she led from ptart to finish, and stuck on well under pressure. Monaghan should be improved fay the race, but Gold Collector looked light in condition. Captain Gazeley was too ffore to have any chance, being last .for the first live furlongs. Subjection pulled hard for half a' mile, and then declined to do his best any more. Mintleaf lieeded the race. EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT CUP. Sea Comet, Young Thurnham, and Gilgai were fairly evenly backed, with the •winner, Lupineel, at a useful price. SulweiJah and Grey Dawn made the pace from Gilgai, Gold Breech, and Lupineel passing the stands, with Young Thurnham last. Suweilah crashed at the sod wall, and at the stands Gilgai led Sea Comet, Grey Dawn, Young Thurnham, Gold Breech, and Oneroa. Sea Comet hit the fence hard near the six-furlong post, and bold Breech fell "at the next fence, where Sea Comet was pulled up. Lupineel had then taken charge from Gilgai, Young inurnham, and Oneroa, with Grey Dawn a long ,way back. He came to grief at the second last fence. Lupineel just led Young Thurnham at the last fence, but once over came on to win by .sis lengths from lYoung Thurnham, Gilgai being ten lengths .feway third, and Oneroa the only other ' Lupineel, one of the contestants at the--tfakuranga Meeting last Saturday, scored <en cosy victory. Young Thurnham should <be improved by this, his. first race for a •long time. He was a little slovenly at yome of his fences. Gilgai did not, stay cm as well as was expected. Oneroa jumped the sod wall badly. Suweilah was going groat guns until ho charged into the sod wall. Sea Comet's rider, E. Warner, lost an iron when he almost came out of the saddle altogether five furlongs from home. FLYING HANDICAP. Halgina was always favourite, with fair Jiupport for Gaillard and Euphonium. Baillard, Shut Eye, Euphonium, Qmlmr«,_

and Halgina were the early leaders, and with halt' the journey covered Gaillard was showing the way to Shut ]£ye, Hipo, Halgina, Euphonium, and Alaric. Gaillard and Shut Eye, both under pressure, were just in front of Alai'ie, Halgina, and Euphonium at the turn. The leaders stopped to a walk, and it was left to Euphonium to beat Alaric by a length, with Gaillard a length and a half away third. Shut Eye, Boriogne, Hipo, and Quillfire followed in that order.

Euphonium began well, and always held a good position, but he appeared a little lucky to beat Aiaric, whose rider certainly did not make much use of his mouut in the straight. Gaillard showed his usual speed out of the barrier, but Shut Eye was soon with him. Gaillard lasted better than Shut Eye, who was beaten at the end of five furlongs. Bonogne and Hipo should be improved by the race, specially Hipo. Halgina, who was well backed, gave a poor display, and was never in a winning position. LADIES' BRACELET. Black' Hod was favourite, with Day Lark and Roche the best backed of the others. Day Lark, Chyrria, Roche, and Royo were the early leaders. Sea View joined in down the back, and racing for the turn Roche, and Day Lark led Royo and Sea View, with Black Rod-well back. Roche, Sea View, * Chyrria, and Royo were the leaders.at the turn. Once in line for home Sea View looked a certain winner. Then Black Rod came fast on the outside, and beat Pea View by half ■ a length. Royo was two lengths away third. Roche, Chyrria, and Day Lark were next. The winner, an aged gelding by Clarenceux from Martine, did well considering his position in the early stages. He was ridden by a younger brother of Alan M'Donald's, who shaped very well at the finish. He was making his first appearance in a race. WAIPAU HACK HANDICAP. Bisoxand Girribillic were the choice of backers, and there was only a medium amount of support for Whenuanui and Sovena. The barrier did not work correctly, and Apathy and Barryander were slow. away. Whenuanui led out from Sovena, Midnight Camp, Bisox, and Tip Tree. Whenuanui and Sovena showed the way across the top to Tip Tree, Bisox, Midnight Camp, and Girribillie. Whenuanui had had enough at the turn, and Tip Tree went in pursuit of Sovena in the straight. Sovena was stopping at the end but lasted long enough to beat Tip Tree by half a head. . Bisox was two lengths away third, and Girribillie, Take Take, and Midnight Camp next. Sovena, from No. 8 at the barrier, began well, and saw out the distance better than some of her opponents, possibly because she was more forward in condition. Tip Tree finished well, in second place, after, giving the winner a good start in the early part of the race. Bisox should be improved by her outing. She was in the picture all the way. Girribillie failed to get out with his usual dash, and, although he made an effort a furlong from home, he could not sustain it for long.
