HUTT CHORAL SOCIETY

"JOHN GILPIN7'

The Hutt Valley Choral Society gave its twelfth concert in the King George Theatre, Lower Hutt, last evening. The attendance was adversely affected by the weather, but the audience was appreciative of the good fare offered'; it was well worthy of better patronage. The society lias rendered signal service to the cause of music in the Valley, and deserves to receive greater encouragement.

The principal item of the concert was Cowen's cantata "John Gilpin," which was excellently interpreted. The society also rendered several of Mendelssohn's part songs, "The First Days of Spring," "The Nightingale," "In the Woods," "Remembrance/ "An Old Romance," "Departure," "Hunting Song," and also Ed. German's "0 Peaceful Night." Miss N. Amies sang with great feeling and expression Gluck's "Che furo/' for which she was recalled, and gave R. Quilter's "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal." Miss Amies also sang Elgar's "Where Corals Lie" and "In Heaven." For his rendering of Mozart's "Larghetto" and David Popper's "Arlequin" Mr. George Ellwood, the violoncellist, was recalled, and gave Dunkler's "Spinning Song." Mr. Ellwood was again recalled for his solo "ICol Nidrei," arranged by Max Bruch, and gave Saint Saens's "Le Cygne." The society is fortunate to still have for its conductor Mr. Robert Parker and for its pianist 3 Mrs. S. M. Hobbs and Mr. R. Harman.
