HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
FOR THE NORTON CUP
The tournament for the JSTorton Hockey Cup. opened at Newtown Park yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Wellington Primary Schools' Hockey Association. ; The competing teams are Wellington A and B, Manawatu, and Wairarapa, and yesterday, although the grounds were heavy and tended, to make play somewhat slow, all the teams showed evidence ot good training. Manawatu met Wellington B in a Very even contest. The visitors' forwards-were full of dash, and were soon across the field, but Schiering saved well. Wellington retaliated, but Burt accepted a pass from Button, and in a solo effort sailed d.Owii the Held, completely baffling the Wellington backs, aud ionndlthe net with a Stinging shot. Wellington renewed the attack, and now began to penetrate the Greens' circle persistently, until Blick centred well, l'Vaser passing to Watchman, who equalised with a fine goal. After half-time Manawatn became more aggres-, sive, and kept the Yellow backs- extremely busy. Shots by Titshall and Martin were well saved by Holland, but Burt got busy again, and added another goal for the Grdens. 'Another pretty passing rush was indulged in by Manawatu, and Burt again scored. From then on Wellington continued the attack, and practically dominated play iv their opponents' half. Shots by Burns and Watchman failed. Wheatley, centre-half, played a wonderful game for Wellington, while Sutton and Burt, in the Manawatu team, were most outstanding. Mr. J. .L. M'Alister controlled the game. . ■ _ Wellington A had a very easy win over Waiiarapa, their forwards playing extremely well. Turnbull (2), Coleman (2), M'Lean (3), and Baker all contributed to Wellington's score, while Tasker and Geal played a solid game of defence. For Wairarapa, the.goalie, Henderson, played brilliantly, while Irwin and Brazendale were also prominent. Mr. E. Lloyd capably controlled the-game.
• The competing teams were entertained at !a dinner at the Y.MIC.A. last evening by the W.P.S.H.A.
To-day's .matches are .between, Manawatu. and W"airarapa, and Wellington A and Wellington B.
