SHOPLIFTING ADMITTED

MARRIED WOMAN CONVICTED.

The theft of articles of clothing, total value £1 3s 3d, and property of James Smith, Ltd., was admitted by a married woman, aged 48, who appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day. Chief-Detective Ward told the Courtthat the accused, who bad three children, had been married for 20 years, and had previously borne a good character. She had been caught in the shop with the goods in a handbag. Mr. W. E. Leicester said the case was not an ordinary one. Tho accused _ had apparently succumbed to sudden temptation, and had not taken the goods deliberately, but because she became clouded in the mind, and did not know what she was doing. Tn view of the fact that she had previously borne a good character, and that all the goods had been recovered, he would ask that her name be suppressed.

The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. Her name was suppressed.
