i INCREASING IN POPULARITY ■ANNUAL BETORX OTHEW ZEALAND '"Boxing is becoming more, and more popular," states the annual report o£ the New Zealand Boxing Association, to be presented at the annual .meeting to be Leld at Napier on 26th -August. ■•• "This is evidenced .by the number of applicants from various parts of New Zealand for assistance in the forming of associations. It has been the policy of -the council before recommending to the Department ot Internal Affairs the granting- of .full powers to new associations to request the applicants where possible-to first. of all test their ability to control contests by obtaining perVfiits and assistance from the nearest established local association. Where the population is small and prospects are not bright the councilhas urged the applicants to become affiliated amateur boxing clubs to their nearest association. In this respect the council 'de'sfres. ;to stress the importance of this question .of affiliated clubs receiving the.-earnest-considera-tion of the annual meeting. "The Christchurch Sports Club has been reorganised, and it is a pleasure to report that the new executive has gone wholeheartedly into the work of placing amateur boxing on a sound footing in Christchurch," continues the report. It is stated that evidence is not wanting that the amateur boxer is receiving _ earnest attention. "Professional ■ boxing, Bays the report, "has been- staged by a number of associations, and it is pleasing to report that boxers have by their good behaviour in and out of the ring reflected credit on themselves and the-sport. It is also stated that negotiations with the authorities controlling amateur boxing in Australia'have been entered upon'by the council with a view to arranging an interchange of visits. The council places on record its full appreciation of the action of the chairman of the Napier Boxing Association, Mr. Malcolm Treston, in presenting the handsome Treston Shield for competition amongst the provincial associations. Provisionary rules have been drafted by the council to govern the competitions, but it is to be hoped the annual., meeting will find time to further consider a scheme that will stimulate interest'in the shield. _ The Appeal Committee, which is situated in Auckland and wliioh has been called together once during the.twelve months, had to deal with an appeal 1 from the-Na- .' pier Association ,against the action of the ' council in granting approval to the Wellington Assoelftion to s£%e the Murray ' v.
