A LAUNCH ADVENTURE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
TAURANGA, 27th July.
The oil launch Whakari, owned by the White Island Agricultural Chemical Company, left White Island at noon yesterday for Tauranga. About an hour later a northerly gale was encountered, with high seas and blinding rain. At 5 p.m. visibility was only fifty yards, and the party were unable to pick up Motiti Island, for which they were steering. After steaming for eight hours it was assumed that the launch was abreast of Motiti, and it was decided to head in for mount Maunganui. At midnight land was sighted on the port quarter, and proved to be the town point of Makatu. Before the course could be altered the launch grounded easily on a sandy beach. Mr. E. H. Baldwin, representing the Canadian interests of the company, and Major A. A. Mercer, director, walked fifteen miles on the beach to Mount Maunganui, and reached there at 7.30 o'clock this morning. A vessel left Tauranga this morning to render assistance.
