FIRE IN PALMERSTON NORTH
(By Telegraph.— Press Association.)
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
A sei'ious outbreak of fire occurred at Eangitikei street at 3 o'clock this morning. A man passing Bett's Building heard a crackling sound, and finding smoke issuing from the rear of the premises, called the brigade. The outbreak was located in Brown's tailoring shop. When the door was broken open the whole interior burst into flames! In the adjoining premises the Ford motor garage, were stored a.large number of cars, and when it appeared inevitable flames would attack this part they were removed to the roaefcvay. The flames broke through the gable of the garage store, containing inflammable products, but a lead'of hose directed on this spot saved the situation. The fire was under control by 4 o 'clock. The premises concerned in the outbreak were those of Ford Motors, Turner (hairdresser), Brown (tailor), and Le Grand Confectionery. Brown's premises were completely gutted, and the others were damaged by smoke and water, the confectionery shop more severely than the others. Flanking Bett's Building on the Square side ib the National Bank's wooden structure, and had'the fire not been discovered quickly the whole block would probably have boen involved.
