REV. JAMES PATERSON
The Rev. James Paterson, well known for many years as the Minister of St. John's Presbyterian Church, Willis street, died at his residence, Buller street, last night, aged 95 years. Ho had been a resident of Wellington for nearly 60 years, and was well known not only in this district, but throughout the Dominion, and the announcement of his dearth will be reeeiv.ed with widespread regret. The late Rev. James Paterson was born at Kirkswold, Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1830, and was educated at the Grammar School, Girvan, and the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. He was ordained in 1857, and was inducted to St. Peter's, Liverpool, in 1866. In 1868 he accepted a call to St. John's, Wellington, and was minister of that church for nearly a quarter of a century. He had held the position of Moderator of the Wellington Presbytery, and in 1876 was moderator of the General Assembly of'the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. During his active life, in this city, Mr. Paterson took a keen interest in educational affairs. He was for some time a member of the Education Board, a member of
the Board- of Governors of Wellington College and Girls' High School, and of the Senate of the New Zealand University. He retired from the active ministry in-1903. His wife died about 15 years ago. Ho is survived by one son, William Paterson, of Waipukurau, and two daughters, Mrs. Porrit, of Thames, and Miss Paterson, of Wellington.
