.A novel'case occupied attention in: the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Humbert Colonna, a tearoom proprietor, was charged with Sunday trading, -It 'was explained that the defendant'spremises were closed on Sundays, but built in the front wall'was a large ■slot machine, at which ohoeolates, and other sweets could be obtained by placing coins in tho slots. ■ Mr. Kirk, for the defendant, contended that the statute-had not been contravened, and quoted an Australian case in support of his argument. Senior-Sergeant Martin said' he had no authorities to offer, but if Mr. Kirk's contentions were sound he could see machines selling fruit, drapery, and groceries on Sundays, while tho .hotels would bo able to dispense liquor that way. . ■ The Magistrate reserved judgment, pending receipt of a report of the Australian case.
