SIR CHARLES HOLDSWORTH.
Sir Charles Holdsworth was born in Wellington in 1863, being a son of Mr. J. O. Holdsworth, Commissioner of Crown Landa. Beceiving his education in the Wellington High School and College, he joined in ,1880 the Black Diamond line of steamers, being subsequently appointed manager at Westport. In 1835 he took service with the Union Steam Ship Company, being given charge of the Westport branch. When in 1891 the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company's business was purchased, Mr. Holdsworth became the manager for Tasmania. In ,1898 he re-
turned to New Zealand as chief manager and inspector, which office was changed to.; that of general manager in 1901. In 1909 he became a member of the Board of Directors, and on the resignation of Sir James Mills from active, control early in 1914, Mr. Holdsworth became managing director. He guided the company's operations during the anxious and difficult time of the war and the subsequent reconstruction, and it is due to his enterprise that the company acquired the splendid new mot-or-ship, the Aorangi, which marked an epoch in the history of ship building. About a year ago Sir Charles left on a health recruiting trip to England, combining business with pleasure, and he is at tho present still absent from the Dominion.
