AUCKLAND, This Day
More was heard of the "surprise packets" this morning, when Arthur Kettcridgc, Philip Matheson, and Sinel and William Dargie were charged with the disposal of property by lottery. Counsel for the first two stated that they were jewellers, who immediately stopped the sale of goods by means of packets on discovering that it was illegal. They gave good prizes, such as rings and binoculars. • Mr. Poynton inflicted a fine of £.10 and costs. The sciiiov-detective said that Dargie was in business in a small way, and adopted the scheme to get a little cash. Ho was a married man with eight children, all under sixteen. Dargie was fined £10, and was allowed two months in which to pay the fine. Several other fines of £1 and costs were inflicted on employees and. canvassers. (
