FEDERATION CONFERENCE
CONCLUDING PROCEEDINGS.
The annual conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation was continued to-day, Mr. T.. C. Brash presiding. The committee appointed to consider the question of the orchard tax brought up a report recommending that.the Control Act be amended to enable the Control Board to pay to the federation the equivalent of the amount of orchard tax rebated under the Act; and, further, that the maximum tax be ss, provided that the Orchard Tax Act is renewed. The committee's recommendation was agreed to, with the addition that no one shall pay' orchard tax unless he has 120 trees or over. -,' ' ■ It was agreed, on the motion of the president, "That it be an instruction to the board to interview the Prime Minister before he leaves to attend the Imperial Conference, and ask him if he will assist Dominion fruitgrowers as against the importation of fruit to Britain from foreign countries, including America." A vote of thanks was passed to Senor Bidone, Consul-General for the Argentine, for the assistance he had given the federation in connection with the recent visit of the Argentino fruit experts. , Mr. J. A.- Campbell; Director of Horticulture, drew attention to the progress made by the Institute of Horticulture, and added that if the recommendations of the institute were -given effect to, they would place horticulture, including fruitgrowing, on a higher plane1 than it had hitherto occupied. The conference "passed a resolution of hearty greetings to Mr. T. W. Kirk, formerly Director of Horticulture, who had done so much for the fruitgrowing industry. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the president for his past services and for the excellent manner in which he had conducted the conference. In reply, Mr. T. C. Brash1 said the conference had been a good one. It had come to decisions'which would be of vital importance to the industry. A fine spirit of harmony, he added, had pervaded the proceedings of tho conference.
