DEATH DUTIES.
• "Does this Bill propose; to increase the death duties?" asked;the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland) when the Death Duties Amendment Bill came down by Governor-General's Message in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon.
;. The Minister of Finance (the Hon. I'W. Downie Stewart) replied that the -Bill did not relate to rates of duties at all. The amendments were purely. technical. At present there was a penalty of 10 per cent, for the late payment of duty, but there was also a provision making interest payable after a- certa.'n date. Complaints had been made against the payment of the pen,alty, as well as interest, and while the provision respecting interest was
mot being abolished entirely, it was proposed to reduce the amount of the penalty by 0 per cent. The other clauses in the Bill were purely technical. . . ".• '
