■ • ■- -,<-,.■- v ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS.
■• - ¥he: annual meeting of members of :the Wellington Horticultural Society was, h.eld last evening in Dustin 's Rooms, Mr. J. B. Harcourt presiding over. a..satisfactory attendance.
i,,.;,removing the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, which has already, been published in "The Post," ;the 'Chairman remarked that this was the "twenty-fifth annual meeting of the present society, under various names. .'Shows .'were held over fifty years ago, .and,a;society was then in existence, JJlit.ihere was a break between that society-'and the formation of the present body. The present system of linking up the suburban societies and the suburban delegates acting on the town committee had given the new blood an interest so vital to the success of "any' body. This was the first year in the"history of'the society that three Shows had been held in the large Town Hall,- and it had been a most successful innovation.
It might not be out of place to mention that the present day was the day -Afcihe,; small exhibitor, which was as it -Shfmld.be, continued Mr. Harcourt. Better to have sixty growers with, say, six entries each, and an equal num.ber of gardeners represented, than ten growers and gardeners with,.say, thirty entries each. St. Thomas's Society was tor be congratulated in winning putright the suburban trophies at the .Spring and Summer Shows, after a yery good competition extending over four years. It was hoped that among the many enthusiastic supporters , of horticulture in the Wellington district two would come forward with an offer of trophies to replace.those won outright.
'Special thanks were due to the ladies who assisted in the tea rooms and flower stall at the various Shows. Tho soicety was .to be congratulated on its present position and prospects, and had now a very good plant, and, given a larger membership, there was much that could be accomplished in tho years , to,, .come.
