RECOVERY FROM SLUMP

MINISTER URGES ' ECONOMY.

HAWERA, 30th June,

When opening tho Hawera Show this afternoon, the Hon. G. J. Anderson referred to the nood for the -fullest, possible development to enable tho country to recover from the slump period. The only way to secure prosperity, he said, was to live economically and within our means. He referred to the cxponditure of £8,000,000 on luxuries last year, and emphasised that tl- only way in which the country could overcome depression was by the restriction of expenditure according to income.

Up to tho end of May, said the Minister, the dairy industry showed a decline in production of butter-fat of fi.9 per cent. Tho decline had been on the butter manufacturing sido of the industry. Tho decrease for ten months of the 1925-26 season was 11.2 nor cent, on the basis of gradings for export. On the samo basis and for the same period, cheese showed an increaso of D.7 per cent. Tho quality of the butter and cheeso this season had improved appreciably, compared with the preceding year.

In a subsequent statement reviewing the production of produce, tho Minister stated that tho decrease in tho value of dairy produce exported for the year ended 31st March, compared with the previous year, was approximately £3,000,000. Of this sum, roughly £1,000,000, was due to lower prices, and £1,000,000 to tho increased stocks of butter and cheoso held in storo un/ler dairy control.

Speaking of tho frozen meat industry, he said that iambs showed an increased output,' the killings of mutton wero somewhat reduced, beof showed a large shrinkage, and boneless beof and pork showed increases. The Continent of Europe was proving a useful outlet for second grade and cow beof.
