"A LOST CAUSE"
SCHOOLS POR GIRLS ONLY.
"Mr. Kirfc. is a braye man; he is pleading a lost cause In perhaps 50 years'. time we shall see that he- is right;" These comments were1 made by a lady member of tho Council of Education at: yesterday's meeting, when a motion by Mr. J. ,R. Kirk that the council , should recommend the creation, iiy.'the/.- larger centres, of schools for girls only, these schools to bo staffed by women teachers, Avas defeated by a substantial majority. . During the discussion on the subject 'it Avas suggested- that such schools Avould provide scope for Avomen to show their powers' as head teachers. Girls, it Avas added, needed a Avoman 's guiding hand. Other speakers, hoAvever, maintained that-coeducation Avas desirable and .that the influence of male teachers on the girls was all to: the good. The four lady ; members on the council supported the: motion,'but the opposition of the male < members Avas too strong and the motion'Avas lost.
