THE ENGLISH TEAM
NEWSPAPER CRITICISM
"STRONG IN BATTING, BUT WEAK IN BOWLING."
(Sydney Sun Cable.)
LONDON, Bth June,
The newspapers contain much comment regarding the selection of England's Test team, the chief of which are:— "The Times."—"The selectors courageously disregarded the form shown at the trial match. Everybody will agree that the team has been admirably chosen with a view to a three days' match." "Daily Mail."—"The team contains no surprises, though many consider the selectors have shown lack of enterprise." "Evening News."—"The chief feature is the paucity of bowlers. The batting is about the best available, but too many of the old stagers lack speed." "Standard."—"The team represents the triumph of the 'old brigade,' and is strong in batting but short of bowlers." G. A. Faulkner, in the "Westminster Gazette": "Safety first has been the selectors' primary, instinct, Form at
present is deceptive, hence tho selectors have begun by relying on older and moro experienced players. The bowling does not appear strong enough to skittle tho redoubtable Australians but may suffice if the weather is wet."
