LYTTELTON DISPUTE
SETTLEMENT REACHED
SUBJECT TO RATIFICATION.
For some days now a conference between representatives of the shipowners and the watcrsiders has been sitting in Wellington relative to the recent shipping hold-up at Lyttelton. The parties went into an analysis of tho position, after which an agreement was reached, at noon yesterday, subject, however, to ratification by the Lyttelton Waterside Workers' Union. The dispute arose out of the demand of the waterside workers for lid per hour above the ruling rates fixed at Lyttelton. Some time ago it was arranged that l^d per hour above tho original award rates should be paid on condition that the men would work if required on Saturday afternoons. The offer was submitted to a ballot and accepted by all the unions concerned except that at Lyttelton, and the extra rate was consequently not paid there.
It is believed that the fact that the Lyttelton union boasts two cricket teams actuated the men in not agreeing to work on Saturday afternoons.
