RUGBY

INTER-ISLAND MATCH

TO BE PLAYED AT WELLINGTON.

When an indication was given to delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union last eveniug that the interIsland match would probably be played on 3rd June, there was strong objection from some quarters. Mr. N. M'lCenzie (Hawkes Bay) pointed out that 3rd June* was regarded as a sot date for the Hawkes Bay-Wairarapa match, and that his union would view with disapproval any decision to play the NorthSouth match on that date, as the interprovincial match would be affected adversely. Other delegates remarked that the ' Tarauaki-Wanganui match was also a set fixture for 3rd June, and would likowise be affected. Mr. M'Kenzie moved: "That it be an instruction to the Management Committee that the North-South match be played on 12th June." Mr. White (Otago) stated that more unions would be affected by playing the match on 12th June than would be the case if it were played on 3rd June. Mr. J. Prendeville (Wellington): "Where is it to be played?" Mr. Dean: "The suggestion of the Management Committee is that the match 'be played at Wellington. In view of the assembly and departure of tin New Zealand team for Australia, the North-South match must b; played on the 3rd or the 12th." During further discussion the fact that a big hockey match was being played in Wellington on 3rd June was mentioned, and a statement made that the hockey people had viewed with favour a proposal that the NorthSouth match be played at 1.30 p.m. Mr. E. M'Kenzie: "It would lie far and away better to give the day to the Hockey Association, notwithstanding the fact that hockey had played cur-tain-raisers to the League game in Sydney. We should be prepared to return good for evil." A suggestion that the word "instruction" in the motion bo amended to "recommendation" did not meet with the approval of the seconder, out another alteration providing for the match being played "on a date other than 3rd June" was agreed to. Finally it was decided that the match be played' on a date other than 3rd June, the Management Committee to fix the date and place. At a subsequent meeting of the Management Committee it was decided that the match be played at Wellington on 12th June.
