A SERIOUS CHARGE

ATTEMPTING TO KILL

AWAHURI SENSATION RECALLED,

A half-caste Maori, named Ernest Taniwha Sutherland, deseiibed as a labourer, aged 38, appeared at the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., charged that on 10th February, at Awahuri, iie attempted to kill Gangi Sutherland. On the application of Chief Detective Ward, the accused was remanded to appear on 14th February. "Mm. Sutherland is not able to appear yet," added the Chief Detective. Tho case is a sequel to a sensational occurrence at a Maori pa at Awahuri, six miles from Fcilding, on 10th February. The.story was that Mrs. Sutherland, who was living with her parents, awoke at midnight to find the house in flames. On emerging, she was, it was alleg d, assaulted by Sutherland, who is accused of having wounded her in the shoulder with either a knife or an axe. The woman lost a great deal of blood, and was admitted to the Feilding Hospital, where she lay for some time in a serious condition. Sutherland disappeared, but later gave himself up to the Palmerston North police.
